Bali Retreat 2013: Day 8 & 9 – Seminyak / Singapore

September 27, 2020

14 March 2013, Thursday

For our last full day in Bali, we had breakfast at Flapjaks, a casual restaurant offering home-made pancakes, waffles and gelatos. After that, we went to Petitenget Beach to have a look. Bali is famous for its many beaches and Petitenget is popular among surfers for its rolling waves. However, it was quiet when we were there at 9:35am and we didn’t see anyone surfing.

The beach was flat and vast but the sand wasn’t very fine for sunbathing. There were other activities taking place though – we saw people fishing, walking their dogs and also people riding horses by the water’s edge.

Would you like a ride a horse on the beach?

We had an early lunch when we spotted an A&W restaurant. Actually, I wasn’t very hungry yet but I just had to have my curly fries, root beer and waffle ice-cream – my all-time favourites.

Next, we went to Kuta Beach. We were not there to swim but just to check it out, because Kuta Beach is like the Mecca of Bali. When we visited at 11:50am, the sun was out and the sea was an enticing shade of blue. However, there weren’t many people sunbathing yet.

We continued walking around Kuta, which was very touristy, with lots of souvenir shops, restaurants, malls and hotels. It was a whole different world from Ubud and Gili Trawangan, which were much less crowded and noisy.

After having a second round of late lunch, we went back to our hotel in Seminyak to rest and chill. We also took a dip in the swimming pool at 4pm to make good use of our resort’s facilities.

At about 6pm, we took a taxi to Jimbaran Bay, where the sunsets were supposedly legendary. Unfortunately, it was a cloudy evening so we didn’t manage to witness one of the spectacular sunsets.

Jimbaran Beach was populated with many seafood restaurants offering sunset views. Like Kuta Beach, it is one of the most commercialised places in Bali and definitely a tourist trap. As we walked along the beach, we saw rubbish strewn all over the place. It was disgusting and such a turn-off. We didn’t have a meal there because we didn’t like the vibe. We left soon after the sun set and headed over to KU DE TA at Seminyak.

KU DE TA is Bali’s legendary original beach club. Like Potato Beach Head Club, it boasts an infinity pool with an oceanfront view. The indoor dining area was very classy, with mood lighting and candles creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

I felt that it was slightly more upmarket than Potato Head and I noticed that the guests here dressed better too. We felt under-dressed in our berms and shorts, so we chose one of the outdoor lounge beds where could chill in comfort. We ordered a bottle of wine and a seafood pizza, which was delicious. A fantastic way to end our trip.

The next morning, we checked out of our resort very early at 6:30am. We took a taxi to the airport and arrived just before 7:00am. At 9:10am, we departed Bali on our Air Asia flight QZ8496 and touched down at Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 1 at 11:45am, officially bringing our Bali trip to an end. It had been a very enjoyable getaway and a great first visit to Bali. It wouldn’t be my last.
