Europe Trippin’ Day 17: Scotland (Edinburgh)

3 February 2014, Monday

It was a pretty relaxed day as we had the entire day to roam around Edinburgh. The morning was occupied by taking a stroll down the Royal Mile, the streets forming the main thoroughfare of the Old Town in Edinburgh. As the name suggests, it’s roughly a mile long, stretching from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. Since it’s the Old Town, you can find many old and stately buildings along the Royal Mile.

Pub crawling is quite popular here

Edinburgh Castle is the largest castle among all those that have encountered during the trip. It sits on top of an extinct volcano and it dominates the skyline of Edinburgh. It is the most visited attraction in Edinburgh, but IJ and I were not in the mood to pay GBP16 to enter the castle, so we just happily took some photos outside the castle.

We didn’t really do much on this day, content to walk and shop around. But having come to the end of the trip, we were feeling pretty broke and our luggage seemed to be bursting already, so we didn’t shop too much either.

These kilt sets are expensive!

The Aberdeen Angus beef burger, which took 20 minutes to prepare. It’s a no-frills burger with no condiments or sauces, so you can really taste the beef. Yummy.

We rounded off the night with another visit to the fabulous The Jazz Bar, where a superb 17-piece Big Band was performing that night. They performed swing and big band pieces, and they were absolutely tight! With only a GBP5.00 cover charge and a pint of beer costing GBP1.75, this was the best bargain ever. Those guys were concert standard and world class. Anyone who visits Edinburgh and loves jazz or swing music must drop by The Jazz Bar and check out this band. You can check the programme lineup here to see when they are playing.

Another day gone, another day closer to returning home. One last sleep in Scotland before returning to London tomorrow…
